easter parade

While I was pulling weeds and watering grass yesterday, I noticed groups of townlet folk taking collective strolls around the meandering loop of our neighborhood. Since there are no sidewalks, and small ditches along side our curb-less lane, people walk in the middle of the road, looking at blooming things, enjoying the sunshine, chatting away. These groups are mostly intergenerational, with grandparents, little children centered around parents, folks filling in the stories of their lives. It is not uncommon to see a dog or two in each group.

How un-American to stroll like this, and how unusual to do so and encounter people in their front yards. I applaud it.

I know this from long experience: to garden is to see and many times chat with all kinds of folk, if only to say hello.
