black and white

A couple of weeks ago, while rooting around in my garden, I heard the high pitched whine of machines hurling around a 2 and one half mile oval track at speeds up to 229 miles per hour, surrounded by bleachers that make up what looks to be the world's largest high school football stadium. The source of this whine is about 3-4 miles from my house.

Which is to say, it is racing season. The Indy 500 is in a couple of weeks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

You can hear the race from our house. It is not deafening, but more like a continuous buzz of engines. During the trials, where racers practice on the oval, it is the sound of a noisy kid racing on a highway not too farway. On race day, it is, of course, much louder. Hugh went to the track on Friday -- check out his report here.

At least it's only once a year.

For Indy, it's a very festive time. I am not much into automobile racing -- actually, I am not into it at all -- but I've learned to accept that it brings great joy to my fellow citizens. And merely by living here, I've learned alot about the sport, more than I ever imagined.

There are actually three races at the Speedway now. The NASCAR event, the Brickyard 400, in August, and the Formula One Grand Prix, which used to be in September but I think has now been moved to June. That one's pretty loud, too.
