We began the Pentecost Sunday service with a piece by Durufle, alternating between the choir chanting Veni Creator Spiritus in the back of the church and Durufle's organ musings on the chant. We sang Sowerby's Come, Holy Spirit. Between the priests' vestments and the choiristers' red robes, the altar was awash in red.
And yesterday evening, the Meridian Vocal Consort, a chorus made up of some singers from our parish and others from the region, sang two choral pieces by Bach and two by Handel, all from the year 1707. These 16 voices are incredibly good, and they were accompanied by harpsichord, small organ, violin, bass, cello and lute. They will sing these pieces in Bloomington next week or so as part of an early music festival there.
The church was full, and the music, particularly the Handel, was powerful. Stephen Rickards, one of the two countertenors, sang an especially beautiful aria from one of the Handel sets.

The bulbs that you so patiently helped me transplant last year, via-e-mail, have shot up taller than anything around them and are the first to bloom in the bed. Um... I think they're irisies. Purple, anyway!
Congrats, dear lemming. I'm glad you are experiencing the joys of irises. They deserve our attention.
