mountain

We went with friends yesterday to see Brokeback Mountain. I was afraid that with all the hype that I would be disappointed.

I wasn't.

It is an artful film about the interior landscape of a love relationship between two men at a time when language and cultural norms gave them not much chance of success. By focusing more on the love and less on the times, director Ang Lee patiently built this story of mostly unrequieted love, giving us an opportunity to care for these two characters in what is actually a quite humble story.

The ending is a grace note, fairly unmanipulative by Hollywood standards.
