Yesterday was the longest day of the year, but heavy clouds rolled in, making the skies much darker by 4:00 pm. Like the mythical kingdom, our rain came in the evening.
The smaller tomato vines are beginning to have ripened fruit. I picked one Saturday and ate it. Despite the greenness still in it, the absolute earthy taste of a real tomato was infinitely better than the red Styrofoam sold as tomatoes in the grocery store.
Most of the vines, their square cages, are up to about seven feet, as are three large sunflower stalks.
As much as I will enjoy the tomatoes and vegetables from this garden, so lovingly planted by neighbors, I also appreciate its aesthetic beauty, the rows so orderly planted, the two walls of beans spread out on netting between poles, the frilly rows of lettuce, and the broad sturdiness of squash and pumpkins.
