surprise

In late winter, I threw some hollyhock seeds into a few corners of my perennial beds.  I thought they were biennials, blooming next year.  So when I saw the plants emerge in late spring, I was pleasantly reminded of them, but didn't think much about it except to note that japanese beetles were chewing on them.

Blooms -- white pink and soft rose pink.  Stalks about 3 feet tall.  More updates as warranted.

I thought they did not bloom until the second year.

I have a hollyhock this year for the first time. Just one, that a friend gave me. I don't know what color it is. It's only a couple feet tall. Planted it about the beginning of June.

Bill -- me, too. But yesterday I saw the first opened blooms on some of them.
