summer heat

In Indy, my new old town, the high today is supposed to be 80, then the temps drop down to a high low range of low 70s to low 50s for the rest of the week.

In August.

In Texas, a high pressure zone usually settles down over the state, cooking everybody from late May or early June until September. I remember one October third where the temps hit 103 degrees. Often there are few breaks in that heat, and that is what I disliked the most.

One needs breaks from the heat. Lord knows, it can get terribly hot and humid here in Indy, caught between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River Valley. But this year is wonderful. Marthachick comments below that it's been fairly mild for Austin, too, this year.

August is supposed to be a dog month for everybody, a go away month, a let's get through this before the refreshing airs of September (or October) hit.

Except, actually, in the desert.

Partner and I once took a week off to drive to Big Bend National Park in far West Texas, and then on to the state park in the Davis Mountains a little bit north from there.

August is the rainy season out there. Desert plants put out their blooming in August, loud yellows and soft purples.
