I did not leave the Episcopal Church when I was there. In fact, I think I was listed at Dumbarton as an associate member, although that sort of distinction did not mean much.
My last year there, I was chair of the pastor/parish relations committee.
And when we left, I felt like I was leaving close family behind. We've been back a few times, and each time, it is hard to go and leave. Very special folk.
I always thought seminaries should go look at churches like Dumbarton, where laity put so much energy into leading, imagining and working together.
Obviously such a parish is not a model for most churches. But it is a wonderful place that offers many gifts.
