I extended the hosta bed around the boundary edge with my neighbor, ran it to the front of the yard and brought it back to the sweet gum.

One of the troubles of shade gardening is that trees often suck the moisture and nutrients out of the soil. Dry shade is a pain.

So by bringing this bed in a circular area, it avoids major, close-up roots of the tree, allowing me to build up the soil and add other shade lovers besides hostas, e.g., coral bells or Heuchera, astilbe, fern, hydrangeas.
