I was invited to a hospitality suite at the Indianapolis Speedway today. I have never been a racing fan, but merely living in Indy means that you know more about racing than most of your fellow countrymen.
This is racing month in Indy, something that meant more years ago, but that still is very important here.
Today was a practice day. People drove their cars around the track at speeds of up to 219 miles per hour. It takes them less than a minute to make a complete lap.
The track is two and a half miles long. Being there, you realize how flat Indianapolis is. I always have the same sensation at the airport. It's the lack of trees, perhaps.
In the infield of the track are four holes of a neighboring golf course. At one point, walking from car to the place where the party was held, I watched men playing golf while hearing the screaming sounds of a car racing past us.
I had a garage pass but didn't go into that area. I did go out and watch the cars from the stands. I guess I am just not going to be a racing fan.
