religion

Jane Ellen has an entry about a theologian she is reading for seminary: R. R. Reno, The Ruins of the Church: Sustaining Faith in an Age of Diminishing Christianity.

She cites a quote from Reno that says our problem in modern times is that we are afraid of belief. We want stability and comfort. We do not want to be challenged or changed by God.

I've thought about this in the few days since I first read the quote on her blog. Modern folk are either embarrassed about faith, treading gingerly around it, or we mock it. Or we stuff it into a vacuum sealed can and say that this is what it is, don't change it, don't think it is something else.
