sleeping with dogs

Emily Yoffe has an interesting essay in Slate on allowing one's pets to sleep in the bed at night.

I went to the allergist for tests, and found that I was allergic to dog dander, among other things. Here's the conversation that followed:

Me: Oh, I have a dog.
Allergist: Well, you're not too allergic. It should be OK as long as she doesn't sleep in your bedroom.
Me: She does.
Allergist: Well, as long as she doesn't sleep next to the bed.
Me: She sleeps on the floor right next to my bed.
Allergist: [brief silence] Well...does it seem to be bothering you?

Wes -- So have you had the talk yet with your dog? I bet she won't understand. There are many things that our dogs care about, but its this kind of stuff that just goes over their head.

No, I never had that talk with her. I knew she wouldn't understand. Besides, the stuffy head in the morning didn't matter. What did matter was the bright eyes, the head in my lap, the expectant look when we said, "walk".

Now I can't ask her, because she's waiting at Rainbow Bridge. She was with us for more than 14 years, and she's been gone nearly five years. I'll always miss her.

Wes -- I'm sorry that your dear dog has gone on ...sweet, sweet animals.
