lessons and carols

Last night we had our Lessons and Carols evensong. I was surprised how many people showed up, given the weather.

A young girl from the choristers sang the first verse of Once in Royal David's City, and then we sang the second verse unaccompanied and then processed with the organist and congregation joining in. We sang Howell's Magnificat, a truly haunting and powerful work. Partner had to fill in as soloist for the Sowerby anthem Come Ye and Let Us Go Up -- he didn't know for sure until Sunday morning. It was good to hear him sing. I wish his parents could have heard him.

We usually sing Advent theme carols, but because of the calendar, we had a Christmas l&c.
