durham

Like the Hogwarts Express -- I'm reading the British version of the latest HP -- we rolled through rain and dark clouds, arriving in Durham around midnight. Then we walked up a cobblestone street, through tiny roads, past the most beautiful cathedral, arriving at last at the Castle, a dormitory for the University of Durham that across from the cathedral. It was quite a hike up the many stairs till we got to the room. And then I slept till hearing cathedral bells this morning.

Tonight's evensong is a major celebration of the aircraft carrier, the HMS Invincible. The cathedral is expecting the Lord Mayor of Durham and about 600 people. This is certainly more than we have had attend our evensongs before. We rehearsed in the choir room (probably called a choir or song school) and then dispersed. I am going to take a short nap and then get ready for tonight.
