at sea

After a couple of days at a little b&b, we took off for sail on a cruise, a first for both of us. The ports were not so exotic: Key West, Cozumel, Costa Maya, and the Grand Caymans (which was cancelled an hour from port because of choppy waves-- we ended up returning to Key West again for our final port-of-call.

The best experiences? Walking on a treadmill in front of a glass window looking out at the sea or walking laps around the upper deck. Eating, alas, too good. Snorkeling off of a beach in Costa Maya, a former sleepy fishing area of the Yucatan that is being changed into a resort. It will become, soon, too slick. Wandering the Mayan ruins at Tulem, a walled compound set on cliffs next to the sea. At that stop, we by-passed Cozumel for the mainland, entering a funky little town named Playa del Carmen.

No use for? The so-called shopping. The need for organized activities at all times.

Sleeping on the ship was good. The weather most good (except for choppy seas on the last two days).

Now, it's back to the cold of Indy.

I have never been on a cruise. Someday ...

Wintertime is definitely a good time to do it too.

I've never been on a cruise either. But I have been to Tulem. Marvelous! And we stayed in Playa del Carmen. The food was so cheap and plentiful and everyone was very friendly.

Hiya Don! Glad you guys had fun. I went on a cruise in Jan 04 with a similar itinerary. We couldn't dock in one of our destinations either due to high winds/waves - it was Cozumel or Costa Maya - can't remember. I'm impressed you walked on the treadmill on the ship! I couldn't get the hang of it with the waves and the swaying and the waves... :)

Did Franklin come with you?

At least it's warm today!

Sorry that I haven't responded. I haven't blogged much lately.

Bill -- I was surprised at how much I liked the cruise.

M. -- I'd like to revist Playa del Carmen. It really looked interesting and less slick, although I gather that along the road between Tulem and there is full of self-contained and large private resorts.

Eve -- let's cruise!

lemming -- Franklin, alas, had to go to the kennel. I am not sure he ever understands when he cannot go with us.
