jumping the gun

Speaking of metaphorical clocks ... I noticed a large maple tree this morning that was starting to turn colors. We're two days away from August.

I was wondering if this especially cold weather for this time of year would have an effect on the blooming cycles. My sedums are starting to look like they may start blooming soon, too.

Do you happen to know if it was a red maple (Acer rubrum)? The red maples in our area are always the first to turn color, and the stressed (by drought, root damage, etc.) red maples are always the first red maples to start turning color. That was one thing that clued us in that the maple in our front yard was dying: it started turning color earlier and earlier every year, and then one year only part of it leafed out, and we contacted the highway department.

I think it was a reglar green leafed maple. I passed it as I drove to work. We have had a series of very cold nights, in the mid-50s, so that could be triggering some confused biological switches a little early.

A work colleague told me that she had seen another tree starting to turn colors as well.

Seems like everything is earlier this year. Most of the corn I've been driving past all summer was actually at full height and beginning to tassel by the first week in July-- nearly a month ahead of schedule.
